Plasma Torch is Diving into Material

Background

While utilizing Torch Height Control, the torch will adjust the cutting height by detecting the material itself. This allows you to cut stock that’s not necessarily flat. If you find that your torch seems to be diving into the material, follow the procedure below to troubleshoot.

Replace your consumables

Reason: Dirty consumables and ohmic touchoff can affect torch height

Please reference your plasma torch manual for information on changing out consumables.

If you continue to have diving issues, continue on to the next step.

Turn off torch height control (THC)

In PathPilot, click on the Settings tab. Then, uncheck Enable THC.

Make a test cut with THC off

With THC disabled, make a test cut. While the cut is in progress, pay attention to the lower center of the PathPilot screen to watch what voltage your torch cuts at. Remember this value.

Change the programmed voltage in the Auto F/S field

Type the voltage that you observed from your test cut with THC disabled into the Volts field.

Go back into the Settings tab. Check the box to re-enable Enable THC.

Make a test cut with THC re-enabled. If your torch continues to dive, contact technical support.
